In the past, there has been resistance to acknowledging Climate Change. However, recent developments in computer technology and the efforts of around 2500 scientists working within the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) have made significant gains in this pursuit.
While according to the IPCC, the earth’s surface temperature has only risen 1 degree over the last 140; it is the current rate of change and the increase that has been witnessed in this “rate of change” that provides a very significant cause for concern.
The majority of Earth’s environmental and ecological systems do not have the ability to self regulate their temperatures. In addition, many ecosystems will be unable to adapt to even small rises or falls in temperature. Whole food chains may be vulnerable should just one species in an ecosystem be affected.
Ecosystems are often linked which makes matters worse. As we do not fully understand organism’s dependence on one another, once this starts happening the results become unpredictable.
